Hi all.

First want to say big thanks to those that keep this site running. BIG THANKS.
Not being a face book user I am hopeful that this useful site stays active.

the question.
I am in process of changing water pump on sj410 1000 cc engine. as you know cam belt needs to be removed to get to water pump.
All went well coming apart.
How do i get correct tension on cam belt without correct tools. Do i just set it tight by feel and mid way between crank and cam pulley with a few mm of movement when pushed by hand ?

Also a follow up question. The tension seems fixed once bolted up tight, does this mean every year or 2 the tension needs re setting ?

Thanks again
Steve

I forgot, sj is 32 years old now and want to treat her to a present, is it possible to buy all the seals and rubber bits that go behind the back plate of the cam belt cover, the old ones are well past it !. IF so where are they , i have failed on search so far.

Enter your VIN here to try and identify the seals you require then try your nearest Suzuki dealer, there normally quite helpful.

Thanks for the info.
I guess I could buy a cheap spring fish weighing scale thing and pull 3kg force and measure, or just guess by hand.
i live in italy, went to nearest suzuki dealer to ask about various seals and they said all behind cam belt back cover are no longer available. Shame as they all need changing really.
Will update with a pic when i decide how to do this tension thing. Any other opinions ?

Any thoughts on wether or not needs re tensioning every now and again ?

Steve

I went on not too loose and not too tight, just enough to give it some movement, but not masses, i think i've got around 5mm play

Just to update an old thread for future viewers of this topic.

I'm in the process of doing my SJ410 60K timing belt/water pump service and yes! you can still buy all the gaskets, rubber grommets etc.

Go to your dealer and either order the original rubber ones shown on the right or Suzuki do a more convenient self adhesive foam kit for about £20 11480-73000 shown on the left.

It takes a week as like most SJ stuff all old stock is stored in Germany.
