Breather to Transfer box?

Post by Phillips321 » Mon Jan 08, 2018 4:14 pm

Hi guys,

I've got breathers on my diffs but need to do the one on the transfer box. Is there an easy way to do this one?

And do I also have to do the gearbox?

Thanks

Hey, welcome back ;)

I've no need to do mine, but here's a link to the basic SCUK 'how to guide' if you haven't already seen it:

Pop the cap off the tbox breather, then get some mole grips to remove the steel insert. Tap the hole to 1/4"BSP and then there's a choice of attachments you can use for breahters.

I use fittings like these for 8mm tube https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Norgren-Swiv ... SwB4BaGrsq

Gearbox you can also remove the small breather barb in the same way but you need to drill it out to tap it to 1/4" bsp if i remember correctly or you can drill the small hole out in it and weld/braze in a small bit of 6mm tube in to attach a breather pipe to.

I use a small (2cm) line of Garden Hose, clamped on with a jubliee clip, with this stuffed in the end

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361220619356

Then I run the 6mm air pipe to the bulkhead (and need to tidy it up)

Saves tapping threads, and having to replace fluid after.

I've done the same on Gearbox, Trans and Diffs, never had an issue this way!

Jimny's are different

Plus if you grease the tap it catches most of the swarf. A tiny bit of aluminium swarf is going to do no damage to a gear or transfer box.

Isn't the transfer box very similar, with the small 4mm lip around where the breather goes?

possibly but there isn't enough purchase on the sj one and just a hose jubilee clipped on is a big gamble. They can easily come off and then you fill your transmission with water without knowing.......ask me how i know :hahaha:

Never again will i do it that way, better to have something 100% reliable.
