Steering wheel shake

SJ413 Got a shake at about 40 mph, it goes after about 50 and feels like wheel imbalance but finally got round to having them done today - the guy said they weren't really much out of balance anyway and I've still got the shake. The wheels themselves have a couple of mm of play on them when moving them from side to side or top to bottom when jacked up which I don't think is too bad? Any suggestions what what would cause a shake? Prop shaft? Cheers

Wheel bearings, kingpin bearings, or steering joints usually.
When you wiggle the wheel top to bottom, is it the wheel and disk moving? or is it the whole hub including the brake caliper?
Wheel and disc indicates wheel bearing, entire hub means kingpin bearings.
As for steering joints just give everything a wiggle and look for play

Get the alignment checked as well, too much toe can cause a wobble.

Thanks for input. I know nowt about steering and kingpins, it's all Greek to me! Assuming the kingpins are ok - the play was very slight, a mm or 2 at most so can anyone give me a simpletons guide to checking the steering? It does have loads of play at the steering wheel but that I believe is pretty normal? Ta

Could be a UJ on the prop shaft. I would take the rear one off and check the UJs move freely in both directions.
