Hello from Basingstoke

Hello my names Tom Flanagan from Basingstoke, I'm new to the club.
recently bought a 1987-88 sj413.
Few little things, you may have heard this a million times but I have quite a loud whining noise coming from what sounds to me to be the gear box. I get this from when the clutch is in there is no noise then when engaged and accelerating its gets louder. Also the higher gear I go the more whinier it gets, any solutions ?
Plus my vacuum gauge on the dash when driving says poor. And the car struggles to get past 50. I have read a few sites and post and gather it's all the hoses to do with my carb etc. Is there anywhere that do a complete hose kit ? Or is it just find some hose and scissors and crack on ? Or is it something else that can cause this ?

Nice SJ!
Welcome to the club. Is your carb a factory unit? The standard carbs can often malfunction and the secondary butterfly doesn't open up at higher RPM's, limiting your power. No idea if that's your problem, I don't have the standard carb - just a thought though. You could always try revving it and looking down the carb to see if the second butterfly is opening up.
My gearbox whines too, in 5th. I don't think it's unusual, although it could be a bearing failing. I'm sure someone more experienced with SJ boxes will say something more helpful soon, I'm mostly just saying hello.

I'm not to sure, I think it is the standard one. So you think it's could be the secondary butterfly, how do you get to that ? And yea I was just unsure about the gear box, didn't know whether it could do with an oil change, bearings or somethings completely unsinister!

Thanks she's going to be my project for a couple of years. There quite hard to find at the moment as well I swear there all being broken for parts!

If you take the airbox off, you should be able to see right down the carb. Then rev it up when looking down at the two butterflies - if one doesn't open up, then you've got the (very common) standard problem with the Aisin carb.
Bear in mind this info is possibly wrong as I'm not an expert on the Aisin carb, I'm just telling you what I remember about it. Which isn't much.
The fix for it is somewhere on the forum - but I can't find it with the search function. I'm sure someone with more experience with that carb (I'm running an SU carb now) will be along soon to set you right.

I think I found the problem, didn't realise it needed the air box with the hoses attached to the carb. It's Running a pod filter at the moment, so I will be replacing Asap!
I appreciate it mate at least it's a start in the trouble shooting. Is the Su carb a lot better then ? Does it take much to fit one ? What years is your Sj? How long have you had it ?

The SU (HIF38 for the 410, HIF44 for the 413 or Vitara 1.6) is basically the go-to carb conversion. Most of us have one by now, those that aren't fuel injected or running webbers, at least - by far most of the regulars on here have SU's.
It's a side draught carb, meaning you have a bit of work to do to get an SU to work, where a Webber will bolt right up - but SU's are so simple to fix/tune! Are they better than a standard carb? If the standard carb works, no, not much (maybe they offer a *little* more power). But they so often fail that the real answer is yes, they're miles ahead. Webbers are more powerful, but more expensive and probably (don't know, never touched one) harder to tune.
My SJ is an 85 pre-samurai SJ413, but it's running a samurai 413 engine - not that there's any real difference between the two worth mentioning. I've had my SJ for a lot of years now - maybe more than 8, but I don't think as long as 10. Can't remember exactly.
My build thread has details on the SU conversion. Also check out Dan's build thread, ScottieJ's, and so on.

On further inspection it has got an Su carb fitted, but it looks like it's been bogged on. I see people have made up connectors to the manifold an this one looks abit sus. I seen abit of your build has come a fair way, looking nice. I want to get this Sj running an looking mint, but it will take abit of time an effort, but in keen for it.

Yes, pics of your carb setup would be helpful. If it's an SU, then it shouldn't be difficult to get it running right (if that's actually the problem).
