Been there , it trying to find one what fits, I was told mine is a Spanish version. One question, on v5c mine is a G16b, just put new clutch kit in and stamped on engine is G16a? Do I have a Heinz 57 lol. I know it's a 1995 model not had many owners got loads of history with only 80k on clock, genuine

The easiest way is to check the VIN number (if it starts with V letter it's Spanish if with J it's Japan).

If I remember correctly there's only 2 types for a mk1 swb Vitara, jap one (same as the sj or so I was told) and the Spanish one. And theres not a huge difference. Are you sure your Vitara is a 16v, being 1995/1996 I didn't think the 16v was around then? I may be wrong though.

I got a 1998 Spanish vitara and my mate got a 1994 jap one I can always get you a picture for reference if needed.

Thanks for your help, I've found one and fitted it all working good. £25 from a scrap yard only 35 miles from me. Yeah it's definitely a 16valve as I said block is stamped g16 a but when buying part everyone say it's a g16b? Will have a look on documents fro the vin and let you know, hopefully you can then help and I can get to know what it is jap with Spanish engine or Spanish with jap engine

The g16b engine often uses the same block as the G16a.... but with a different head and different pistons. Nothing unusual
My 16v has a g16a block too

Early 16V Vitara engines used the G16a block, they usually had a Denso injection system rather than the later Mitsubishi system. Over the years they get swapped about though.
