I personally follow this routine

Check Bywaymap.com for local routes - www.bywaymap.com
Compare the Routes (Switch to OS view) with Bing Maps - www.bing.com/mapspreview
And then Google Street View and see if I can see a Byway sign

If those three boxes are ticked I will make the trip to try it! - Although I'm on road tyres, so it's usually gets mapped for when I get my Mud Tyres!

Follow the guide also which is http://www.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/greenlaning

Cheers!

I wouldn't bother with google street view, a lot of byways aren't signposted.

You should really check to see if your local council has a list of rights of way online as well, this will tell you if any have a TRO on them (are closed)

If you are new to green laning just make sure you stick to the Legal route and do not drive "off piste"

Byway map is really out of date and not accurate.

Best approach is to check trailwise or OS maps for Byways and UCRs.

Once you have a little route marked out check it against the local authority definitive map for that area and their closures list to check the lanes are still legal to drive and haven't been reclassified or currently have restrictions placed on them.

When driving the route pay attention to any notices like A4 signs tied to posts etc which may indicate a closure.

If you unsure of a lanes status don't drive it and remember a sign of vehicle use on the ground does not indicate a right to drive.

Ahh, see, there's a lot of Routes on Trailwise local to me, yet none of them are actually Byways according to the O/S Maps.

Around Somerset and Bath all the byways that i've travelled to have the Byways signposted!

They are probably UCRs then. There should be info on trailwise for each lane.

You can use a bit of it as a guest or join GLASS for access and also support a good cause who are fighting for our rights.

I use TrailWise a lot and it is brilliant. I would definitely suggest joining Glass they have a brilliant handbook you receive when joining and it will give you access to TrailWise
