Vibration, help.

Running a 1992 Samurai fitted with original 1300 engine with a Weber carb. When changing gear and building up the revs there is a lot of vibration. It's at it's worst in second gear, seems to be when the revs are climbing from 1500 to 2000. Once past this figure vibration stops and everything is OK. In 3rd, 4th and 5 gear it's hard to detect though it's still there. Could the carb be running a bit lean and require a bit more fuel under load? After going through a river ford the other day and driving up the steep bank on the other side in second gear it seemed as if the whole thing was going to shake itself to bits. As soon as the revs reached 2000 the vibration stopped and things settled down. Don't think, but I'm not certain that it's a mechanical problem as there is very little play anywhere in the drivetrain. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Are your engine mounts solid?

Just been out and checked engine mounts, they appear to be OK. Thanks anyway Anton.

I've been having a similar but opposite problem - in low revs, I get vibrations in high gears. The higher the gear, the greater the vibrations.

After about 2500rpm, it goes away.

All I can suggest is you check all of your mounts (gearbox mounts, transfer box mounts etc etc) but it *could* be caused by anything in the drivetrain, really. I doubt it's in the diffs or propshafts/UJ's, but even that's not guaranteed.

Will check out all mounts etc. later today and post any findings. Thanks again Anton. Hopefully it is something simple and an easy fix.

Loose fly wheel? Pilot bearing? Gearbox input bearings / shaft? Truly knackered bearings in some gears?

Is the alternator missing any blades?
