Welcome back.

I found the LWB we had was OK for green laning but I wouldn't want to take it anywhere too challenging. Jimnys seem to be a lot happier with the trickier stuff but lack the space for taking dogs and friends out.

If you're more interested in a laning vehicle that also makes a good car, I'd be leaning towards the GV. Just a more practical vehicle. I don't think it's going to struggle too much with simple laning.

Just don't expect it to do stuff your old SJ did. It's a compromise vehicle.

I don't know about diesels.

Ours was a LWB with the 2L petrol and it was OK on fuel for what it is.

Never really bothered to work it out properly though. We put some slightly bigger than standard ATs on it as they seem a little under geared cruising in 5th which seemed to help a bit.

Looked up the MPG's on autotrader (so don't sue me if this is wrong):

GV1600:
Urban mpg 28.2 mpg CO2 emissions 193 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 41.5 mpg Annual Tax £265
Average mpg 35.3 mpg

GV2000:
Urban mpg 23.5 mpg CO2 emissions 230 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 36.2 mpg Annual Tax £290
Average mpg 30.4 mpg

Grand Vitara 2.0TD:
Urban mpg 35.3 mpg CO2 emissions 190 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 48.7 mpg Annual Tax £265
Average mpg 42.8 mpg

Those are 2001 models. The latest ones do much better:

2015 Vitara 1.6:

Urban mpg 44.8 mpg CO2 emissions 123 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 58.9 mpg Annual Tax No details available
Average mpg 53.3 mpg

45mpg around town! Nearly 60 on the mway! That'd suit me just lovely for a lap around Europe. I'd love that drivetrain in my SJ... But you won't find the "new" Vit for less than about £15k.

Bloody hell tax is expensive in the UK nowadays.... people here moan about paying €200/y for a 1.6
