There is probably a secret method that will flash the light and tell you what the problem is...
if anyone will know, rhinoman will.

I have a 2003 GV 1.6 and sometime the light comes on, mine has once been an O2 sensor but the error that keeps popping up is the EGR, I spray some cleaner in there and it is fine for about 8 months.
Where abouts are you as someone local my have a code reader.
I have one and I am in Kent.

You've cleared the codes and the learned settings, the ECU will probably retune after a while but you still need to fix the fault. You can get a cheap EOBD reader from eBay for a lot less than you are being charged for a diagnostic, get one that shows live data as those are much more useful than a simple code reader.
