It will have the engine size in CC stamped onto the side of the engine near the gearbox timing hole on the passenger side.... vitara 1.6 will say 1590cc
1.3 will either be 1298 or 1324 depending on the age of the engine

Ok thanks for that. I knew I had seen it somewhere. It's got 31s on it and is supposed to have a rock lobster box in, I don't think it has, what's the easiest way to tell?

take the rear prop off, and either take the front off or unlocks hubs... then put gbox in neutrol and turn the input flange to see the 4L ratio of the input shaft to the other shafts

Probably although some people convert SPIs and use and electrical pump. Does it have a mechanical pump on the head?

I would say you have a 8v G16A type of engine as i do. Mine is 1991.

The Vitaras with carb were made from 88 onvards to 98.

someone correct me if i'm wrong.

You also have a type of engine mark on engine itself.
