i run a 1998 1.6 vitara, the front diff has gone, theres one available but its a 1996 would it fit?

If it comes from a similar model, i.e. 1.6 5 speed to 1.6 5 speed then it should fit. The spline count for the shafts changed that year so you need to check that its a 26-spline diff, if it isn't then you would need the drivers side shaft as well.
