Alternator?
Alternator?
Hi guys,
what rating alternator should be fitted into my SJ413? the one I have in at the moment, from when I bought it has always struggled a little for example, when headlamps are on and I take my foot off the gas the lights dim...(also the red lights on the dash come on very dimly)
you see where i'm going lol...
Being a newbie more or less to SJ's - what rating alternator should be in the wagon?
Any help greatly accepted...

Re: Alternator?
Mine dims at idle too. Should be a 35a if I recall, but I'm not sure you actually have a problem. Do you mean they dim at very low revs, or they dim at any revs as soon as you take your foot off the loud pedal?

Re: Alternator?
thanks for the reply firstly, they actually dim when I running idle. They go back to normal brightness when i hit the gas... but if I have wipers on they go dim and the wipers wipe very slowly?

Re: Alternator?
Mine is dim at idle, brightens up by about 1000-1200rpm.
My wipers are slow no matter what!
Either it's normal, or we both have the same problem...

Re: Alternator?
Don't know about mmacs battery, but mine is new. Cranks over my engine just fine, which (if I've got the choke set appropriately to the current temp) starts immediately with no struggling. If I don't have the choke set correctly, it turns the engine over easily, and for as long as it takes me to pull out the choke.
Except in summer or mild weather, when I don't need the choke at all, it just starts like it's just come out of the factory.
Your LJ's don't do anything like this?

Re: Alternator?
I seem to remember when I had the standard engine and carb in mine. On tick over with no electrics on it ticked over at a steady speed. When you then turned the heater fan or lights on, the engine speed increased a little.
So it's probably normal, just border line power output from the alternator.
You could try removing it, and ensureing the brushes and contact area on the armature are nice and clean.

Good idea, Ladaman, now I think about it, I haven't really taken care of my alt - been too focused on other parts of the truck!

Re: Alternator?
Its the idle up on the carb isn't it?
Increases the revs for more load
