New SJ416 Samurai Owner

Post by deanbayley » Wed Jan 14, 2015 10:08 pm

Yesterday i came back with home with my new toy, i say yesterday what i mean is 5:30am this morning after the rear prop shaft decided it didn't want to be attached anymore and sheared off..

I'm not sure if the rear axle/diff caused the UJ to fall apart or if the UJ caused the 3-4mm of side to side play in the diff but either way i need a prop shaft and probably an axle (as i suspect its probably damaged the crown and pinion) or at the very least the support bearing..

Suggestions more than welcome on where to get new bits..

In the end I had to get on the floor and unbolt the rear prop and put it in 4WD to drive the last 170 mile (of 370 miles)

NOT FUN AT ALL!

Plan is to remove the engine and interior, remove the body and wax oil (etc) the chassis as its totally solid and i want it to stay that way, then ensure the bottom of the body is rock solid anything that isn't will get cut out and a new pieces welded in.

There is a hole (you could get your fist through) on the N/S/F behind the head light but strangely the other side is totally solid.

New winch bumper, arch trims, side steps and eventually outer roll cage..

2 big new batteries (plus bigger alternator) to ensure i can run a winch like the SUPERWINCH TIGER SHARK 11500LB for at least 20 mins without the engine running.

Hard top, one with an easily removable bit above the front seats for summer.

Replace the 2 front mounted electric candles with something more useful.. (Suggestions welcome)

Then a full respray in...

I'm sorry, no really i am, i can't help it...

Yellow (Sorry again)

Hi and welcome. Sounds like you had a bit of a nightmare there.

I guess both the pinion bearing and prop were already in a bad way. Whip the rear shafts out and check the ring and pinion for wear. It will likely be ok with new pinion bearings, crush collar, and seal.

:welcome: to :suzuki: club UK, sounds like a good plan.

12000lbs is way overkill for an Sj winch. 9500lbs is more than enough.

Removed the half shafts before finishing work but mrs had tea on the table so didn't get chance to take the diff out, going to have a look in the morning, where is the best place to get the bits from, i've heard good things about rob storr, but i (as many others have) have called and txt and got no reply.

I've sent the shaft to C.P.S Drivelink to see what they can do but i'm not hopeful, the sliding coupling inside the rubber boot has a fair bit of movement in it as well..

The coupling is worn away as well..

15-35mph was awful above 50 was just a gentle vibration, i actually forgot about it a few times and made me jump slowing for roundabouts..

When i looked at it, it certainly didn't FEEL that bad moving it with my hand, couldn't see because it was dark..

I picked it up at 5pm and went straight to the local euro car parts who of course didn't even list props or couplings

Welcome to the club.

Not a great start to ownership but the parts aren't too hard to get.

Low Range in USA do a good range of parts, Rob Storr and RockWatt make quite a few gucci bits in the UK.

Just need to check everything and see exactly whats needed.

:welcome2:

Good looking sammy, a little jealous!

Get a new rear prop, Mike Harris usually has some. I suspect that the rear diff could be ok (you never know!) although if it's not, then buy a whole diff for a couple of quid. I don't see that you are going to need a whole new rear axle!

I have 8 diffs so far...

Thanks :) I paid a £1,000 for it with 6 months MOT left, not sure if thats average or not..

I think it was a daily run around (probably garaged) before someone started playing with it, it had the 1.6 at 62k and its currently at 68k, its had the proper adapter plate used as well..

It is far far too solid for something thats been used off road a lot, there isn't a drop of rust on the chassis..

I don't think i'm going to have to do all that much welding..

Just looking at wheel arches, fancy the look of the anus TJ ones..
