As an old school CB'er from the early 90's I can safely say, most small Midlands used to suffer from an engine whine. And static while driving too. There is a word for it but i've actually forgotten the correct term (getting on a bit).
I've had many midlands in many cars and all used to suffer from it, and would need a 'choke filter' fitted in-line on the positive side of the power lead, but I have a midland alan 98+ now and its an 80 channel radio and doesn't suffer at all in the SJ. In fact I have two, I have the President Lincoln multimode in there too.
Don't forget, on ebay now a lot of sellers sell CB radio kits with 'already tuned' antennas and state that you just plug in and go - ignore it.
Each car is different, and where you mount it comes into play. You need to check the SWR with a meter and get the best possible lowest reading (lowest being 1.1) on all channels. If you have a high reading you'll 1) hear hardly anything or won't transit too far 2) blow the radio eventually.
Just keep that in mind when buying too :)
