Was on the motorway going to Bristol volksfest today and the engine decided to give up at about 70mph

sounds like a severe knock in the no4 big end.
Rather than limp it to the next junction and home we called the RAC rather than running the risk of it throwing a rod.

however I already had an engine on the stand ready for a rebuild and by the time I got home my father had already stripped it ready for new rings, will crack on tomorrow night to get the new engine rebuilt ready to go in.
Think I'll throw the 5 speed gearbox in at the same time.

Only a five minute job for a man of your calibre.
Remember Scott, the clutch plate only goes one way, if you put it in backwards you may get a grinding noise.

Yeah it'll be sorted in a few days, will keep me busy for the next few evenings!
remind me not to ask you which way the clutch plate goes around though
