I'm not saying it definitely is the headgasket as you can get oil in the cylinders and smoke from many other things like valve stem oil seals, piston rings etc. I guess it was too dark to see what colour the smoke was?
Just also make sure the Pcv valve is working and not blocked etc.
Have you pulled the plugs to see if they are wet/fouled/oily?
Just don't panic yet! It's only an engine and as long as its not knocking it can all be fixed easily enough!

Nearly got the head off, just gotta get the belt, fan and cover off. Looking really rank!
What would you recommend cleaning all this mayo off with?

I would change that inline fuel filter for bigger size and make sure filter ends are good and tight in fuel lines, it could be letting air in fuel system and adding to your starting problems.

That size filter is usually ok, I used to run one, however you want to trim the ends off and use the section of the filter that is stepped up a size inserted into the fuel lines
Get some degreaser to clean the head, really you want it checked for flatness, skimmed if necessary and pressure tested, most of these places will clean it up for you inclusive of the cost.
