Do you know where the carb came from? A company called Mitcham Motors used to sell them in kits for performance upgrades for various cars. I had one of their conversions on a Vauxhall Viva, the model I had had a big adjuster wheel on the bottom of the carb and a 'plunger' to lift the slide for testing the mixture. The 'plunger' method didn't work at all for me, I set it up by ear and then checked it with a Colourtune and it was only one click out. That would have been about 30 years ago!

Rhinoman - no idea where it came from. I got it through a mate who didn't even know it wasn't an SU - we all thought it was one until you pointed out it looks *just* like a Hitachi!

Twiss - the Hitachi was all shiney until I bolted it into the SJ. It's only done a few hundred miles, but coating it in Sussex, Surrey and Essex has left it looking less than shiney! :P

I have no doubt the SU will end up just as muckey - not that I'm bothered, as long as it does it's job!!!

Spannerfest 2 was a resounding success, so now the plan is:

Make a manifold adapter, fit the SU

Tune the SU to pass emissions (oh, God...)

Sort out the diff breathers (pipe, T pieces and reducers ordered)

Check rear halfshafts run true, fit new bearings and reinstall into the rear axle.

Fill the axles with the correct oil (ordered 75w90)

Fit new bonnet catches (ordered)

MOT

Visit some of you lot for greenlane type awesomeness.

Nice one, glad to hear Spannerfest 2 went well.

You'll soon be back out again. Maybe just in time for the snow. Then again, maybe not as you're in London.

Anton! Don't bother with the SU yet mate just get the MOT done!!!
In fact you should try and book it in for an MOT, but offer a few notes to sort out the emissions on their gas tester.... BEFORE the MOT... then when its right they can MOT it

Its easy to install and set up an SU, but as with all parts changes there are bound to be some teething problems so it may put the MOT back further

Just sort your rear axle out and get it done.... the rest can wait!

Rear axle's done, and I drilled out the captive bush on the steering damper, and bought a set of bushes for a mini. Can't remember what they're supposed to be for, but they fit (kinda - I squished them in with a vise, then squished in the collar with a vise and a scrap UJ cap off a Hilux).

Now there's no play in the "front steering arm" (doh! Mr. Halfords man, it's a STEERING DAMPER...) so that shouldn't hold me up on the MOT.

Stuff I have left to do:

Put the rear wheels back on

Sort out the diff breathers
Fill the axles with the correct oil (which I have 5 litres of somewhere)

MOT

If it fails on emissions again, then:

Make an SU adapter and fit the SU HIF44 instead of the Hitachi
Tune the SU to pass emissions (that should be fun!)

Then tax it, and then drive around visiting (annoying) you lot.

Busy this weekend, hope to finish off tomorrow.

We'll see - can't get the engine to fire up - so I need to work that out too. Hopefully it's something simple.
