As Scottie pointed out a whole axle would need a diff in, unless you just fitted stub axles, then the diff housing might foul and cause unwanted dragging.

Cheap solar panel? Charging off the alternator uses extra fuel...

Two stub axles welded to a thick piece of box section could work? You'd have to be careful to get everything lined up properly (not sure I have that level of skill) but it should be possible.

Or maybe you could make it so it bolts on to the box section "axle"?

Then drill holes in the bottom of the box section and use standard SJ leafs. You wouldn't even need to make perches, just get square U bolts and make a retaining plate. Add shock mounts. Boom. Done.

NylonAdmiral and myself are planning a possible trip next year down through france and into Italy via the Hannibal trail through the Alps if anyone is interested. Possibly returning via Austria and Switzerland so we can go play on a few Alpine coasters

That would be an incredible trip, good handful of SJ's all in convoy through the alps. That would create an album worth keeping.

I would certainly recommend you give the old girl a once over and make sure that everything is in running order. Other than making sure she is in good running order I can't imagine you should have anything else to worry about. I would suggest packing extra supplies in the vehicle just in case you find yourself in a tough situation, but with a caravan you should easily have extra supplies already. The only other recommendation that I would have is to just do it. Whatever arises you will find a solution for, and no matter what may arise you will create memories.

Caravan idea is well out the window as just seems more hassle than its worth, so probably taking a small trailer with spares etc. The Asia bit might be being replaced with south Africa now, as China really don't make it easy to get in!! Will have it ready long before we go, plenty of time to break it in, break it, and fix it.

are you talking about driving to South Africa, I did the trip on an overland truck not an easy trip but great fun
