I still highly recommend the SU conversion though.
I had a 1300 engine which bit the dust... got to the point where it just wouldnt start.
Put the SU on it and used it for a year after that

no i am not too bothered by warming it up as its not my daily drive,

i have had a look at the choke section in the user manual online but cant figure out which bit i need to take off... can anyone give me somewhere to start ??? thanks,

To take the choke plate out...

- Undo the screw or nut that hold the black metal thing (plenum chamber) on top of the carb
- move any random pipes out of the way
- Lift up the plenum chamber and you will see the 2 throats of the carb.
- One of them has a butterfly right at the top, the other doesn't
- The top butterfly is the choke. It should be held on with 2 small screws.
- Remove them VERY carefully and store them somewhere safe.
- Remove choke plate
- Plenum chamber back on and away you go

I did run mine in the winter like this, but had to sit for 5 minutes feathering the accelerator to warm it up before it would move lol

i had a look at my carb today on my lunch and the way i have rigged it at the moment is i have adjusted the screw that operates the choke so that it is perminatly held open. ( the butterfly is vertical) i had it running like this before and it was fine. Took it out for a long test and the revs become stuck in the 3,000 4,000 range. (not too sure as my rev counter is broken). when i turned it off for a couple of hours it ideled fine. drove it a bit further and the problem happend again.... i turned it off and sat for a while to see if it would sort itself out but as soon as i started up again it raised the revs. today when i had a look at the carb i started it up and was idleing fine after i had warmed it up.
I am begining to think that it may be something a bit deeper within the carb getting stuck causing the revs to elevate as the problem is intermittant and i havent changed anything to make it idle high or not. anyone have any ideas if it could be anything els or is this still a dodgy choke problem ??

Have you tried disconnecting the idle up plug from your carburettor? Its a green plug going into it
It pushes the revs up when lights, etc are on.

Sometimes its a brown plug! on my engine the Green plug is the Fuel stop solenoid.

When it was idleing high last time i remember reading something about this. I disconnected both pluggs whilst it was running. the green one being situated under the carb i cant remeber what it exactly plugs into. and another cable that is neer the front of the carb / manifold area. Situated next to the altinator. both of these did nothing to the idel speed :(

It should have stopped running altogether if you unplugged the fuel stop solenoid

Mine kept running when I unplugged the solenoid too. I think it's seized.

where both of the cables i unplugged when running to see what they did and nothing happened haha

Yeah they never did anything on my standard carb either lol
I just thought it was jammed or broken
Worth a go though
