Starting/ warming up

Thanks guys for your interest, is it one of those problems that you ignore and it goes away? The whole injection/auto choke system looks very complex and there is nothing in the workshop manual to help. Its so complicated I don't fancy tackling it myself, but would like to have the sammy running efficiently. I only make short journeys and I suspect that could be the cause as it doesn't really get thoroughly warmed up. I don't have the manifold cover and hose for cold winter climates, I think that might help to warm it up quicker, so will be on the scrounge for one here.

It couldn't be something as simple as a sticking throttle cable could it?

Not a sticking throttle cable as I checked that at first and the throttle arm was at its rest position, but engine still revving.

Jim take it your samurai is a Single point injection late samurai? What exactly is the problem? does it idle too high on warm up? if so is easily adjusted. going to do mine in a few days could do a quick how to guide if that would help?

My Samurai became more and more temperamental, so took it to the local garage for a service hoping they would see the problem and I would be ok. No such luck, service was needed but carb faults persist. It starts but won't run and needs several starts to get it to run at tickover, if you accelerate it cuts out until it has warmed up a bit, even then it cuts out unless you rev it hard to pull away. Tickover can be intermittently variable and can be annoying at traffic lights when it is revving and I suspect people are thinking I'm ready for a race away. I still have the original Suzuki carb.

I decided to call in an engine tuning specialist to check it out, and he immediately found problems with the carb. Main ones being, the auto choke butterfly was not connected to the actuating mechanism, parts were missing. The tickover setting was incorrect and screwed right in. The solenoid that stops fuel going into the carb when you turn off the ignition was not working as the 'O' ring at the end was missing lost in the carb, causing the vehicle to run on when ignition turned off and letting too much air in on normal running. There were other adjustments and wear also that caused problems. The heat shield from the manifold, and hose that circulates warm air back to the carb was also missing which effects the efficient running of the engine. I don't know why the garage didn't pick up these problems, but they did say I needed another carb which was true.

Owing to difficulties in getting an original replacement carb at a reasonable price the tuning specialist recommended a webber replacement conversion, have bought this at a very good price new, and am just waiting for it to be fitted today, and hoping all my problems will disappear and the sammy will run sweet again.

All sorted now guys, running better than new after fitting a webber conversion and having a service and tune up. Now looking forward to a nice warm dry summer for open top motoring.

Webber carb bought from Southern Carburettors, new including adaptor fitting, was £303.60 with VAT and shipping. I bought it on the recommendation of a local tuning guy who called Steve and arranged a 10% discount for me. Southern Carburettors 01293- 533843. Your story sounds so similar to mine, I bought the weber kit too and it is a 100% improvement over the old carb, I know people slate webers but mine has been fantastic
