I may not be writing this correctly, but its a black and white wire with yellow dashes.
This I presume is the 'sender' for the starter.
I'll have a closer look at that diagram.
cheers

I have a feeling that it might not be an original wire from the loom then, I don't recall ever seeing an SJ having a tracer with dashes and. I see no reference to a wire with those colours anywhere, might be worth peeling back some of the black tape to trace back to what colour wire it's connected to?
Do you have a Black w/green tracer anywhere?
Wiring is a pain to help with when you aren't there in person, especially with vehicles of this age as god knows what previous owners have chopped and changed

I'll have a look at mine later and see what colours they are...
Pretty sure the starter motor wire is white with a red tracer, but can't remember the other two

That would be a wire that runs to your alternator Twiss and is for the brake fluid level and battery charge warning lights.

ooops yeah i meant alternator *facepalm*
I know there are the 3 that come from the same place in the loom... one is alternator, one is temp sender and one is carb solenoid...
My brake fluid sensor wires come from the top of the loom at the bulkhead.
From what I remember the solenoid and temp wires look pretty similar and I always seem to connect the wrong one the first time!

Ya it seems its a black and yellow off the Starter Solenoid bottom connector.
There was nothing on the top connector.
The 2nd pic shows wires in bunch behind altenator.
Black White and yellow one is free..

That top connector is not standard, looks like its just held on by the bolt on the stud? On a standard SJs wiring there is only 2 wires on the starter, the main power feed from the battery and the black w/yellow tracer as the trigger wire.
Is it actually just yellow paint on the black w/white tracer wire? I still think you should unravel it a bit more to see if its spliced into the loom anywhere.

When you say used to go to carb solenoid I assume you have something non standard, IE SU.
If that black and white wire touched earth it will have blown the shown fuse. The engine ran when you connected it to the large terminal on the starter solenoid as this is permanent live (which is why it didn't stop). The yellow to sender will/should have a white tracer.
If the fuse has blown, just insulate that loose black/white wire and replace the fuse.
The black/white is the supply to ignition coil and alternator.

Added the alternator to the supply diagram...

Thanks Darrell, that sounds like it makes sense. I will check in the morning.
