ed cheers mate for the reply. i just got back from wales where i was talkin to a mechanic who siad it can be done in situ but he said to hone the bores with a special tool to help the rings seat

Well, like I said, the engine I did it to was abused pretty bad, so we weren't too bothered. Honing is, as far as I know, kinda like really precise drilling.

Honing tool, just put it in a drill and off of go.

the way im lookin at it is its smokin really bad and would be described as knacked so if i get it wrong it cant be any worse

Am i right in thinking you could just stick a carb on that spi engine (with the addition of a electric fuel pump)? Or do you think it would be easy enough to wire the loom in?
Just thinking if i ever need a new engine in the future. There does'nt seem to be many carbed engines around any more, but quite a few of those spi engines.

If I was going to do an engine swap, I'd probably go for an SPI 1300 from either a late SJ or an early Jimny.

But if you're putting in an SPI engine, you might as well use a 1.6?
Hardly any more work, and an extra 300cc is nothing to scoff at!
