I have seen a few where it's on the column instead of the wheel but it's still easy to re-align,

Just done it and it was on the steering wheel on my SJ410 (1986)

For refrence my Spanish built Sammy has the cancellation mech within the column. I guess the correct way would be to center the axle and center the steering wheel then fit the pitman arm in the correct position on the splines to accommodate both.

I just put up with one indicator self cancelling more easily than the other.

Mine are spanish and on the column too but I thought you could loosen the indicator ring on the column and adjust it that way
