I've been trying to upload pictures from my iPhone but it says the files are to big. When I get a chance I'll post them from the laptop.

If they're too big from your phone, they'll probably be too big from your laptop, you aught to get a photo bucket account, it's dead easy and you can link your photos to any forums you use,
Looking forward to the photos,
Luke

Looking at the photos, I'm not certain whether or not your dashpot vent holes (whatever they're properly called) are not blocked by the intake design. If so, that will cause you problems. If not, it could be something as simple as you needing a good tune up.
Have you checked your spark plugs to see if you're running too rich/lean? Have you checked your timing?

The pipe scottie has marked small as vacuum advance.... take it off from the vacuum advance unit at the distributer end
Check to make sure there is NO vacuum from that pipe when the engine is idling. For an SJ this pipe should only have vacuum when the throttle is open. These carbs often come from Minis which had FULL vacuum at idle.
Simple solution to drill a new hole, but if its connected with full vacuum at idle it will severely throw off the timing. Would run better just blocked off and both ends

Thank you very much! You have been very helpful, I really appreciate the picture and advice. I'll have a look at it when I'm home and block the vent and see off the vacuum advance is vacuuming at idle. I'll let you know how it goes.
Again thanks!
