Side to Side knock

Post by courior » Mon Oct 06, 2014 9:18 am

Hi all,

Recently, since fitting big AT tires (i think this is a coincidence though), i have been getting a knocking sound from the rear end somewhere. It sounds like the exhaust knocking very gently but its not this for sure. I can replicate the sound going over sharp bumps or if i grab hold of the body at the rear and push/pull so making a side to side motion, there is a clunk each way. The sound can be "felt" on the body and is best described as something knocking the body (like the exhaust) ... Anyone had this and know what it could be?

I suspect it could be the leaf bushes as they are pretty worn but would have thought they would make a different noise.

Cheers,

Lie underneath and get someone else to rock it side to side...then you can see if its the exhaust!
If it ticks over...leave it

Not the exhaust.. Its either the leaf bushes or something in the axle. Got new bushes on order so will try that first.

I was telling twists earlier... If I boot the top of the rear passenger wheel I can reproduce the noise. Its a dull hollowy sound that sounds like a wooden mallet on a brake drum. The wheel bearings are solid. I just hope its the suspension!

From that picture i would say suspension is a pretty safe bet!

Lift shackles??? :vomit:

I wouldn't bother, they do more harm than good with standard sj suspension.
