Chains instead of MT/AT Tyres?

Post by courior » Mon Sep 22, 2014 10:04 pm

Hi all.

I do most of my driving on the road and have really good street tyres that are smooth/quiet and even pretty good offroad in the dry... But when it comes to getting muddy im sure they will suck.. So i have been reading up on 4x4 sites and a set of "bar" type chains can be even more effective than MT rubber!

So.. Has anyone tried chains when mudding? is it a good idea? They are so much cheaper than a set of MT Tyres and i can put them on and off as and when i decide to play in the mud and enjoy smooth road tyres the other 99% of the time.

Cheers.

Might be an expensive suck it if they suck and you get stuck....if you get my drift. Mud tyres can be found fairly cheaply used and not too expensive new.

Thing is, over here im looking at 400 euro plus for a decent set of tyres. But chains will set me back about 50 -80 euro.... hmmm decisions

So about £300. Sounds about right for smaller tyres. It's up to you matey. Do you know anyone with chains so you can try them out first?

I would buy a set of mud terrains, something like maxxis bighorns. They are really good on road and will help loads in the mud. I think you'll get fed up of putting a set of muddy chains on and taking them off all the time. Some decent tyres and you can just drive through and carry on to a road.

Tyres everytime for me.

The numbers speak for themselves. How many people I know with chains, Zero!

Cheers for the opinions lads. I appreciate the comments.. I'm going to keep an eye out for both tyres and chains. Which ever comes along at the best value first I'll get. Putting chains on and off doesn't bother me for the twice a month I'm going to get muddy. I do see the point that on medium amounts of mud that Mt tyres can cope with it will be a pain in the Arse putting chains on as they are really for the thick clay that any tyres can't handle alone. Maybe I'll end up with both and be unstoppable lol.

Cheers all
