Grand Vitara problems

Hi all, I'm having a few problems with a 53 reg 1.6 grand vitara I've bought, the revs are dropping when turning right. I bought this car a few weeks ago for a decent price and I knew the engine light was on and it ran a little bit rough, hoped it just needed a good service as it does have high milage - 146k.

The main problem is when driving and you turn right the revs drop and engine runs really rough, this only does this when driving so not when stood still and turning the wheel or if you stand still, turn the wheel and rev to simulate driving if you get me.

I have a code reader and the only faults that have come up are:

EGR valve - now blocked of and this code is not showing.

O2 sensor - there are two, one before the CAT and one after, I have replaced the one after the CAT but the fault is still showing so I will replace the other - I have cleaned the other but no joy.

The car has has a full service with all new filters including fuel, throttle cleaned out and it's been run with redex in for a couple of weeks.

To see if the power steering pump is pulling too much power I've taken the belt off and drove it but the problem still happens, so I know it's not the pump or anything to do with the steering I think.

I have seen posts regarding the Idle control valve, so I've taken that off today and clean it out and also taken it apart to check the little bearings inside, still no joy! New ones of these are £200 quid so not cheap.

Can anyone help?

The O2 code will tell you which sensor it is, B1S1 is the front, B1S2 is the rear. What are the fuel trims showing?

Hi, the coder I have is only a cheap one but the fault code is P0135.

I'm rubbish with all this electrics, what are the fuel trims, what does that mean?

The internet reckons P0135 is bank 1, sensor 1 so that would be pre-cat

Yeah that is the one I have changed so I think I need to double check the wires.

A lad I know has said the problem with the turning could be the fuel pump as the problem only happens when moving.

I was wondering if it could be something to do with the power steering system?
Maybe something is getting caught up. I imagine the PS pump is still belt driven from the crankshaft pulley. If the pump is jamming up for some reason could maybe stall your engine?
Either that or rip the belt to shreds.

Might be worth taking the belt off and see if still happens. Be warned though your steering will probably become very difficult without the pump running! Worth a check though maybe

Could it be that the fuel pickup is blocked or that when you turn right all the fuel sloshes to the left and then the pickup is dry and sucking air, making the fuel pump loose pressure and hence rough running.

Now you mention it I had a similar problem on my samurai... The pickup pipe has a right angle bend at the top on my samurai tank... it had rotted away and was sucking in air along with the fuel.
Unfortunately I couldn't see it until I took the tank off and the top of the pickup pipe fell off!

Thanks both of you, yep when I think about it it dose make sense that it's something to do with the movement and the fuel, I think I will order a new pump and take the tank off and see what I can see............ Will keep you all posted, thanks
