Are farm jack any good and worth having in your truck ???

Post by RickUK » Fri Apr 18, 2014 3:16 pm

Have been looking at a farm jack too keep in the back of my Vitara, although i doubt that it would be used much but they can be picked up new reasonably cheap from Ebay, not sure what the best length would be as i had been looking at the 4ft version as that would fit in the back of the truck behind the rear seat. Can they be used as a temporary winch albeit a slow manual winch i do have a decent set of shackles and recovery rope and as i understand it the rarm jack can be made into a temp winch to help you out if need be.

Are they a useful piece of kit or just a heavy old piece of metal to carry around for nothing.

I will highlight the fact that i dont do any off roading like you guys as i only require a 4x4 to get on and off farm land once or twice a week, its mainly for carrying gear around.

They are heavy things so if you wouldnt be using it often with the truck its unnecessary extra weight in my opinion. I use mine quite often offroading but leave it out for general driving.

I have a hi lift jack, it's a great bit of kit but tbh I use it more in the garden than I do in the truck. It was great for pulling up a tree stump I had, and I've used it to hack out fence posts, brilliant really

I've had one for years, it hasn't left the workshop for most of those and hardly ever gets used, does come in handy sometimes for some jobs though.

Tall, clunky, heavy, too unstable to be used as an actual jack in my experience.

Can be used as a winch, but a mates 4x4 and a strop or a proper winch work a million times better.

I got stuck over a concrete block once, one tyre behind it and one in front, stuck on the chassis...

high lift jack was perfect for getting off that! ;)
