There was a bloke on dufflock who did a diesel conversion, and he was adamant that it ruined his SJ totally, because of the excessive weight of the diesel engine.
I think he was called "Diesel Star Destroyer" or something similar. I think.
Whatever you fit, make sure it's light. I wouldn't fit the common (vauxhall, peugeot, VW) diesel conversions myself, I'd think about an all alloy block (inc turbo and intercooler, Toyota 1.4D-4D - 99kg, about the same as an M series engine, or VW 1.2TDI 3cyl, about 65kg, slightly less than a G13a).
The yota is 145ft-lb/90hp standard, the VW 120/70. New manifold and turbo (and retuned ECU) have seen 200/120 out of an older generation of the Veedub 3pot 1.2. Sounds good to me so far, but...
Either of those will require you transfer over the wiring loom, ECU, ignition/key, dashboard electronics etc from the same car. Vastly more than a lot of work, which is why I dropped the idea.
I suppose you could just follow Twiss's lead and go custom ECU, but that can be spendy, and just as complicated (you've got to create a fuel map etc).
I'm liking the idea of a J series swap more and more. It's (supposedly, from what I've read online) similar in weight to an M series engine (the 1.8 is, the 2.0 has a cast iron bottom end, or so I've read).
If you're serious about doing a swap, think about how much time/effort you're willing to throw at this.
