Once hydrogen fuel cells start taking off SJs are going to be easy to convert. Plenty of space between the chassis rails for the fuel cells and a massive engine bay for a motor, reduction gearbox and all of the control systems.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

A motor in each wheel hub. That way you're 4wd, with all the advantages of a locker, none of the disadvantages. And no drivetrain to break.

Electric BMW minis already do this.

Never mind all the shit about hydrogen. I'm not in greenpeace. I just want cheap fun. You know once electric cars / hydrogen cars are the norm their fuel will be taxed at 80%

A couple of months ago I had a briefing about how the motor industry was expected to develop over the next 10-12 years - hydrogen cells and electric cars weren't mentioned once.

That's a good point, BUT oil is still running out.


The thing about running one motor through the standard transmission is that electric motors are more efficient at higher speeds, up to a point, because the current passing through them is lower.

Known oil is being used up is probably a better way to phrase it. Still plenty of coal under the UK too.

A petrol engine should run just fine on hydrogen if it's tuned just right. The real problem is storing it *in* the car.

As for 80% tax - that'd be super low compared to the rates we're paying on petrol...

And you can make hydrogen fuel in your basement with basic equipment and electric from the grid. Its hard to tax that...

In that line of things, I knew a bloke that had an old Transit that ran on gas from his central heating.

I'm not bothered about saving baby koalas or any of that rubbish but more as a technical exercise, a way of running an SJ cheaply and a "Fuck you" to the kind of people who drive around in Toyota Prius's thinking they're saving the world.

I reckon the government might give out grants for hydrogen conversions when the fuel supply infrastructure is in place.

Thinking about your idea Anton, having a motor in the wheel hub would mean you wouldn't have the friction of the transmission and you wouldn't need to run all the motors all the time either. Only trouble is there wouldn't be much SJ left besides the chassis and body. I reckon the way to go would be to get the chassis from a scrappies or something and get a fibreglass soft top body from New Zealand.
