Steering box greasing

Post by penpontgreenwoodwork » Thu Aug 08, 2013 9:19 pm

Hi All
I'm in that place, you know ,that weird 10 days between MOT fail and retest :S . I have just taken up the slack in the steering box and thought about greasing it. Do I just undo the 4 bolt plate that has the adjuster on and fill it with grease or will it explode in a shower of springs and ball bearings?

Can't really answer your question with great authority but my sj410 (now sold) required 90 grade gear oil and I'm pretty certain that there was a plastic/rubber bung which you prised off for filling. I wouldn't use grease before you really know the answer (1) it may not provide the correct lubricating qualities and (2) some greases are prone to hydraulicing when under extreme pressure - not really what you want in a steering mechanism.

I'm sure someone will answer your query with more knowledge than I have about the vehicle.

Should have oil in it. If the seal is shot they are generally filled with grease. Just pump it in through the filler hole.
