fitting an oil catch tank to SJ410, need advice please..

Post by Jay18 » Tue Jul 23, 2013 9:12 pm

I'm looking at fitting an oil catch tank to my zuk as there is oil going into the inlet where it connects to the air box, so obviously thy cant be a good thing, the oil catch tanks I've seen have two pipe on them, but I only want to put the pipe from the rocker cover onto it, I'm looking at getting the one with the breather on it..

any advice about this please?

Where is the oil going to? Not sure where you mean.

If oils not supposed to be there i'd look at sorting that problem rather than a catch tank.

I think I agree with Jordi if the catch tank only has like one feed pipe how does the oil get out the tank once its full so it must return to the sump id of thought? :er:

I always get a small amount of oil in the airbox and just wipe it clean every 6 months or so when cleaning/replacing the filter.
However if your getting too much oil it may be worth making sure the PCV valve is not blocked.

it is only a very small amount of oil, I'd just like to stop any oil at all goin into my engine as that can effect my emissions can't it? plus I think it would be a cool mod, how would I go about fitting a oil return? will I have to drill a hole in the sump and wel a captive but into it? or is there an easier way?

On a high performance turbo engine it's a worthy mod.

On an SJ the small amount of oil that recirculates through the filter won't make any difference to the performance or running of the vehicle. waste of money in my opinion.

| used to have one in an old polo i had. When it drooped below 50mph pressure would force oil out of the crank breather into the airbox, into carb, it would then die which could be a bit scary. Solved it with hose pipe and a two liter coke bottle.

so is it not worth it then? is there any sort of inline filter I can put in the pipe between the air box and the rocker cover? just like to be sure..

Bad Idea if your SJ ever goes in deep water

If the PCV valve is working correctly then there should only be a small amount of oil recirculating and it won't be an issue, if enough oil is recirculating to cause an issue with running then you should fix the cause of the problem.
