Trailer Tests

Post by Karis » Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:08 pm

Does anyone know of any good places that do trailer tests in the Wiltshire/Somerset area? Been looking for quotes and the cheapest I've got so far is £400 - which is the shortest course they do, apparently you cant just do the test? So its a 8 hour day there (5 hours training, 3 hours test) they said it would usually be £481 but lowered it to 400 because myself and two other people need to do it.

Jeez, is that a general consensus price?

I have to do one as I can't drive one on my licence but that price is putting me off!

Ive got quotes for 3 places around here, all of them are around the 480-600 mark, the test itself is 140 or something, but is included in the quote price. Not cheap! Luckily boss is paying for me to do mine!

Karis works on a farm and needs to be able to tow a lot more than her current license covers.

Realistically on our license you can't even tow a car on a trailer really unless you have a tow vehicle that weighs around 1800kg, even then you are pretty much limited to a 500kg trailer with a 1000kg car on it once you include passengers and fuel etc. and the trailer has to be plated to 1800kg, doesn't matter if the load weight is below what you are legally allowed to tow, the trailer has to be plated correctly. So you can't tow a trailer rated at 2000kg with a lighter car even if its empty.

The towing laws are quite simply retarded. it should all be done on actual weight not plated weights.

Yeah saw that cheers mate, I need a proper test cos I'm only 22 and need to tow livestock around! Bit silly really cos I can drive tractors with trailers all day long but when it comes to a truck with trailer I can't it's ridiculous!

Licences held before 1 January 1997
If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you are generally entitled to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM.

This is the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it’s being used on the road.

You also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.
