1600 8 v engines

Post by Hotbob » Mon Jul 01, 2013 12:41 pm

Just a quick question. Apart from the obvious differences of the spi and carbed engines are the engines the same. I'm looking for a replacement for my Vitara. Thanks Bob

I think the carb engine has a mechanical fuel pump built into the engine. The SPI engine has a seperate electric fuel pump.

If you are running a carb and you buy an SPI engine you will need to fit an electric pump also.

Other than that I think they are the same.

Nahhhh theres not much competition in it really, the difference is, if an electric one breaks it will stop working, but before that at least it won't piss your engine oil out all over the place

Well I have a spi Vitara and need a replacement engine. So to clarify spi manifolds will fit a carb engine?

carb manifold fits the spi head so cant see why it wouldnt work the otherway ;)

yup... the 8v manifolds will fit any other 8v engine...
some require some fettling to fit though... for example, if you try and put a 1.3 carb manifold on a 1.6 carb engine, the fuel pump is slightly bigger so you will need to dremel it to fit, not loads of hassle though

You can't use the mechanical pump for SPI anyway, it's a low pressure pump and the vitaras fuel pump is in the tank anyway ;)

If you get a carb'd engine best thing to do is remove the fuel pump and push rod from the head and make a blanking plate to cover the hole.

Other than that, the block and heads should be pretty much identical so you can swap all ancillaries, inlets and exhaust between the engines.

Does the spi have an EGR valve fitted? that's the only other possible difference that I can think of as the airways for this are blanked off on the carb heads.
