1.6 vitara into a sj

Post by carnut » Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:45 pm

just fitted a 1.6 vitara in my sj. if any one else is thinking off doing this.. its really straight foward, use 1.3 sj flywheel and clutch. i fitted the engine straight to the gearbox without an adaptor plate, (top bolt line up, but you have to fabricate a u profile bolt for the bottom two holes). as theres no addaptor plate the n/s engine mount goes on with just drilling the holes lower. the o/s mount, i cut the base part of the mount off, i then welded it to a 3mm flat bar redrilled and didnt need to cut and move the chassis mount. now for the starter motor, to bolt straight in, use the thin starter (if you can find one!). the fat starters wont fit, unless you do what i did. take one grinder,,, "i know what your thinking" but when you cant get a thin starter... you have to grind the engine block ribs away bit at a time, you also have to grid the edge of the starter as to fit the round hole it goes into. works a treat. you also need a 1.3 exhaust manifold a sammy radiator and engine pulleys need changing, as the vits use rib belts. ive also fitted power steering, so ive had to move the rad foward and sdeways..

Nice write up Andy.

However i much prefer bolt on solutions (adaptor plate skinny starter). Much easier to replace parts on the hoof so to speak.

One question... why did you change the pullies? :?: 8-)

hi henry,,
changed the pulleys so i could run rib belts, also i had a altanator with ribbed pulley. adaptor plate, just allows easy fitting of bolts. on saying that!!, i used an adaptor on a ford to vw once, and i got clutch judder. i put it down to an unbalanced centre plate. when i pulled the engine out and measered, it was the spiggot shaft not sitting in the flywheel. as for the starter, threre seems to be loads of fat starters around! and not to many skinny starters,. (if i recall didnt you have that proplem?). but at the end of the day, its just some advise.

Yes, im running a copy of a calmini conversion plate. And yes i had problems locating a skinny starter, but i ended up getting mine rebuilt. And i have also bought 2 more since the rebuild. They will be there then if i need them.

And you havent seen what happens when you mate me and Mr angry!
