vitara pas pulley set up,help needed!

Post by ojr1979 » Sun Jun 23, 2013 3:43 pm

Went to the scrap yard the other day and bought the whole setup for a vitara pas conversion to my 1985 sj410,i got everything including the alternator and both the pulleys off the engine as all write ups ive seen tell you to do this. The alternator fits straight on no probs and the fan/water pump pulley off the vit fits good to although i will file down the back edge slightly as it rubs the casing very slightly. The problem i have is with the double pulley.I have read in all write ups its just a case of lineing it up and drilling holes to suit but my problem is it doesnt even enter the hole in the timing belt casing, its that big it touches the fan/water pump pulley that i want to use off the vitara and i can only see 2 tapped holes in the cog it needs to go into? have i missed something in these write ups as i never came across this anywhere? any help or advice is much appreciated cheers!

I'm not sure if its possible to use this set up on an F10a. The redrilling of the double pulley is done when fitting it onto a g13 engine. There's no where to bolt it onto the crank pulley on an f10 is there as its only the centre bolt that holds the original pulley on unlike the g13 and g16 where it bolts on with the smaller bolts on the crank pulley.

Yes Scottie from what I can see what your saying is correct! Does this mean its not possible to fit pas from a vit to this engine? Or would I need a double pulley from a different vehicle? Surely someone somewhere has done this I would have thought? Cheers

I think the way to do it would be to use an original style belt and fit a pulley to match that on the P/S pump, then run one long belt around it all using a tensioner set up maybe?

Or you could use an Electric power steering pump like Ian Edwards has done on his KJA, this is probably a better option as it won't steal more power from the engine, F10s don't have much to start with

If I got hold of another pulley like the original I have I reckon I could weld them together and that'll bolt straight on then it's just sourcing the correct pulley for the pas pump? What ya reckon?

Problem is it needs to be welded perfectly true and ideally balanced or at least checked that its in balance.

My fathers 1.6 had half a serp belt pully welded onto a 1.3 bottom pulley when we bought it, it was out of balance and made the front crank oil seal leak.

Thanks for the advice scottie i think the cheapest option for me now seeing as ive already paid for everything anyway is to use the vitara fan/water pump pulley and get it welded to the original crank pulley this will have the same multi v pattern as the pas pump pulley and just keep everything else as standard. This then should work fine.Where i work they deal with things called choppers and they balance spinning things all the time i can get machining and lathe work done to so getting it to spin evenly and true shouldnt be a problem.

Sounds like you wont have an issue then  If you have access to machines it probably wouldn't be too hard for them to machine up a custom pulley ;)
