I think it should hold around 35litres if I remember correctly? Has it been dented as that will reduce the capacity?

Strange :er: :er:

Workshop manual says 40l
Average price today for unleaded £1.343 = £53.72 to fill from totally empty
I fill mine up at reading 1/4 tank and costs about £40.

Basically your fuel gauge or sender or wiring is faulty. When it reads empty you must have half a tank left.
My gauge hardly ever goes over 1/2 tank when it's full but at least seems to read correct when lower!!

I just do about 160 miles then fill it back up, I'm too lazy/cheap to find out what wrong with mine.

The most likely culprit would be the tank sender but to check this properly you need to remove the tank and then the sender and then check it's resistance values at the appropriate heights/levels.
More work than I could be bothered with as I expected nothing to come undone or snap off.

Is it a standard fuel tank or has a pervious owner put a smaller tank in it's place?
If it ticks over...leave it

Sorry about that
Right then, I can only assume half a tank reading is correct. So why can't you get any more fuel than that in it :er:
I can't think of any reason :S :argh:
