Rev Counter probs

My rev counter used to flicker, but now it has given up the ghost, any ideas on solutuions?

Hi Tim. Welcome to the site.

The rev counter is controlled by the coil pack under the body. First off i would check all connections on the coil, especially going back through the bulk head.

If that all seems ok, i would swap the dials to see if that makes any difference.

My rev counter also is failing it is stuck at 2000 revs but when I rev hard it does go up a bit but not correctly, where is the coil you mention and what does it do?
My speedo is also shaky but sort of works.

The coil is the unit that supplies the ignition system. It is the cylinder shaped object screwed to the bulkhead and connected to the centre connection of the distributor cap.

There are a few plastic connectors there. Some going into the distributor housing and some to the body. Also under the plastic cap of the coil there are 2 brass studs.

and the rev counter is usually wired to the negative - terminal on the coil on sjs

This is where the rev counter gauge gets it's info.........You can check this connection first and that black connection block....


To be honest though if it's stuck at 2000 it sound more like the gauge has had it :cry:

If you can't find a fix, I'm designing a retro-fit one. If I can get a decent one made and fitted to mine, I could make you a kit.

I would be interested in your retro fit rev counter providing it still looks standard, and how you adapt it for the SJ. I want to keep my Samurai standard but with quality improvements, as I think it will serve me better in the long term as I am only using it on the road not as a mud plugger. I am continually doing work on it to bring it up to an acceptable quality until eventually it will be concours condition. (If I live that long!!!)

It doesn't look standard. It's going to be a bar of LEDs that light up. More LEDs is more revs, with each LED being something like 250rpm. I was going to connect it through a high impedance to the LT side of the coil.
