Bargain CB (hopefully)

Post by Jordi » Tue Dec 11, 2012 9:00 pm

I' e got a few CBs lying about. Various states of used or broke. Really fancied an older retro looking one to replace the dead one in the Zuk

Having a bid on this. If i get it cheap enough it'll be worth servicing it and fitting it.

Hopefully another ebay bargain and it's in darlington.

Ace I love the look of old CBs, I really need to get mine hooked up, mines a modern small one though as I wanted something I could tuck out of the way, think I paid £20 for mine.

New CB cant go wrong with a midland or cobra. Expect to pay £80 plus new.

As they're only for pay n play or green laning no need to go OTT. A simple 40 channel uk frequency will do. I run a midland 98 in the wagon. Had it four years. Only issue is the mic wiring. When you fit any CB try to secure the mic wire so it doesn't pull on the plug.

I'm taking a chance on this one. Most people i know run midlands. A lot of their models are a smaller unit. About 2 thirds car radio size. Older CBs and the more high end ones tend to be radio sized.

How far you get depends a lot on the aerial. I just run on a 2' cab aerial and get about a mile. If you go for the 6' whips and SWR (tune) it properly you can get a few miles on a good day.

Aerial want to be high up with no obstacles in any direction for best performace. Not ideal when off roading. Even when going through trees and low obstacles they will bend and bounce back. The turbo mag base sticks well.

I haven't had much use of other models. I do have a 1989 midland cb in the SJ. Its never faltered. Was my dads wagon cb back in the day.

I had mine serviced and put a new mic on it for £35.

If you do go for a cheap second hand one i'd still opt for midland for reliability. Most good cb shops can repair for quite cheap and you can still get the mics for £15 to £20.

A lot of places will do a starter kit for £75. CB, aerial, aerial mount.

Also when fitting as short and straight a co-ax as possible. If running two aerials use a proper harness and a avoid using t pieces and joining wire. Have the same length wire to both aerials. Two aerials helps eliminate blind sports caused by the vehicle itself.

One brand i do not recommend is moonraker. Again i know a few people who had these, including me, they are cak!
