That picture should be the other way around. The LWB should be towing the Datsun
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

1986 SJ413 KJA (pickup)

Post by Jordi » Sat Nov 24, 2012 6:23 pm

Well. Shes home. Havn't had a good look about her yet. A few rusty bits but no signs of major rot. Fairly straight body. I think she's been well cared for.

When i sort my garage tomorow to get them parked properly (its a bit tight due to an aray of shit)i'll take a few photos and give her a once over.

the rust i found on mine

posts for pick up bed to mount on.
rear of cab panel seem
rear spring mounts
"u" channel mount the fuel tank hangs on.
rear cross tube to chasis leg brackets rusted.

the rest is normal sj stuff

Cheers Andyrew. I'll check those bits out when i get round to working on her. Im going into the garage later on. Make some more space.

Got a few jobs to do on E727 first. Nothing major thankfully. The pickup is just sitting for now. Unless the weather gets real bad i wont be putting the pick up on the road till febuary. As i have no history of the motor i'll be doing a full service prior to use too.

I'll report back later with photos and findings.

Well, the garage tidying didn't quite go to plan. Turns out most of the stuff I was going to bin is required for other house orientated DIY jobs.

But I've swept the floor and put some stuff back away in the cupboards, it made a bit more room and they are now both in pretty easily. When I get rid of the pallets and plasterboard it'll give me another 2 foot of width back.

Initial findings aren't too bad. It ticks over like a bag of hammers. I know the carb isn't set up right and probably won't bother with it. I'm already on the lookout for an SU. It's not as original as I was led to believe, but I had my suspicions because in the photos the bonnet has the loop bit the soft tops have. Upon inspection the bonnet was blue in the past.

I cant find any real tin worm. patches on the arches, in the wings, door bottoms. Usual SJ places. Brake master cylinder has a growth on it and looks a bit leaky. Air box to carb rubber has a rather nice "sticky tape" bodge on it. Seats are scrap, it has half decent seat covers but when i looked underneath it was a mass of gaffer tape.

Exhaust looks new ish, tyres have about 5mm on them but look old, walls are starting to perish a bit. The lights just seem to do what they want.

And heres some photos.

Nice easy job. Means i can get rid of a set of seats to the tip now too. Save a bit of space.

The original seats were completely dead. So after much grinding, cutting and welding to fit new bucket seats to the samurai the old ones have been transplanted into the pickup.

Its only a small change but it has made a difference.
