Brake caliper advise

Post by Xoquin » Wed Oct 24, 2012 8:45 am

Hi guys

I'm doing a rear brake disc conversion and i thought whilst I'm at it i'll get some vitara calipers to go on the front and use my front calipers on the rear to improve my braking all round.

I picked up some vitara calipers last night and I noticed that the piston on these are smaller than the ones from the sj. So, am I have right in thinking that the calipers with the smallest piston should be on the rear (which in this case would be the vitara ones)

Thanks, Neil

I never actually compared the piston size but I run vit callipers on the front of my sj, however I still have rear drums, I just went by the fact vits are heavier so the brakes should be more powerful

Ha! Thanks Scott.

Well i've done a bit more research and the vitara calipers (1.6 1989-2000) are smaller than the sj ones (48.1mm to 51mm)

It is also right that the smaller ones go on the rear, which in my case has the added benefit that I can fit the vit calipers at the 9 o'clock position instead of at the top meaning the bled valve is in the correct place!

Will try and post a pic if anyone's interested (and if I can work out how to do so!)

Neil

Maybe I'll be fitting them on the back when I fit my other axle with rear discs then
