They are easy to change and quite cheap. I would just get the correct needle before fiddling any further.

Correct. The needle sits in a hole and as the piston slides up the needle is tapered to allow more fuel to match the air. The thinner the needle is at a certain step the richer the mix will be and vise versa for thicker.

The thing is that they all start at a similar thickness at the idle point so although you may be able to tune it well at idle once you increase the revs the mixture will be well out.

Therefore like Scottie has said above the only way to get it right is the right needle.

I had a needle that was a similar ammount off the reccomended one in my 1300 and it never ran right and was a pain when it came to the emissions test.

In the SU sticky theres a little guide for checking the spring for a hif44 which is probably similar but you will need to find the correct value on burlens website.

I've got good news and bad news.

I've got my bull bar mended and straightened. It's got a much thicker piece of scaffold pipe in the middle now where the old piece buckled. It's painted and looks as good as new, aside from the odd scratch.

Bad news is I've been a colossal idiot and left my petrol filler cap at one of the local petrol stations. I've got a cheap one that just presses in but I need a proper locking one otherwise I'll get my petrol nicked, and fail the MOT in March so I just BIN'd on eBay so it should be here soon.

By the way, I'm still after a side repeater cover as you can see the one in the picture is still held together with gaffa tape. Has anyone got one of the big 410 ones around that they'd sell me?

Go back to your local garages and ask, when I left my mum's micra petrol cap on top of a pump (i did it twice!) I went back to the stations I had visited, they both had cardboard boxes in the back with filler caps that had been left, I tried them one by one until I found the one that fitted. I think you should do the same or you will need a different key for the filler cap.

Good shout but I already tried that. I went back the same day I noticed it was gone.

I was looking through some of the old documentation for my truck and found a bunch of papers from one of the previous owners (The old chap who owned her form new and when he died and then it was sold to a back yard car dealer from whom I bought it). It's very similar to my little book that I keep in the glove box. It's got the dates he did things, like oil changes and filters and stuff.

I almost got teary, because at the top of the first page it reads as follows:

'B780 LBG - "Blondie" D.o.B. - 20:11:84'
