electrical gremlins

Post by dan_2k_uk » Wed Aug 01, 2012 10:22 am

before I have to get a multimeter out later has anyone experienced this?

Indicators wont flash but if I bridge the relay (that I know works) all switches and bulbs function correctly static. Fuel guage is reading low which I first thought was the sender but now think may be related as the rev counter is only reading half aswell?

Guess theres a earth missing or corroded somewhere behind the dash which also provides the ground for the flasher relay but cant find anything suspect.

Any ideas where this rouge connection could be before I chuck any time at it? Guessing theres a big one for the dash loom somewhere but cant find it.

well on mine at the mo, if i indicate the battery light flashes and on occasion the rev counter will die until i stop indicating. i'm puttin that down to a earth lead but i havent had chance to check it out yet.

when i moved my side lights i cleaned up one of the earth points under the bonnet and that seemed to cure it until i went off down a rather muddy and wet track. so im guessing its covered in dirt and not earthing properly.

not sure bout the fuel gauge tho. im yet to experience that.

but i would say there would be a earth under the dash as well. not sure as to where tho. i'll have a look when i go under there to find where that dam water is coming from!

On mine the plastic floppy pcb type thing on the back of the dash unit snapped. Broke about 3 or 4 of the tracks and the dashboard went completely doolally!

Fuel gauge now goes mental whenever you activate something electrical, and the rev counter stopped working.
Now the only things that work on my dash are the lights along the bottom ;)

Should probably check that even though it looks ok there was a lot of heat/hammering close to it during the VL.

Just realised you were on about the back of the dash pod and not the PCB that is the piss poor excuse for a fusebox in the spanish built passenger footwells. Will check that!

On my Jap built 413 the main loom earth is on the passenger side. It's quite a large black wire that comes from the loom and is fixed to the metal plate bolted to the dash tube/bar. However the must be joins from this wire to other components IE instrument panel. I have no idea if these are done inside the taped up sections of the loom or if there is joins behind the dashboard somewhere.

Unplugged everything and plugged it all in again. Sorted the indicators. There is alot of dust behind the dash from paint stripping and sanding.

Fuel guage still reading very low. The light isnt on so I guess its not the float being punctured. Seems to read low for a while then not at all. Rev counter still not right either. Will hopefully track it down today amongst other odd jobs.
