Post by Mish413 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 5:46 pm

Have got a replacement engine as one of the pistons shattered in last one, have put new head gasket in and engine runs perfectly but when i put water in the rad it comes out of the sump. Im sure this is major but just not sure on how this is happening?!? please any ideas or reasons needed...........

Is a lot of water not just a little runs like a tap from sump plug! even when engine is not running
Any ideas?????? Is it possibly a cracked lump?

is it possible you've got a water hose going to the wrong place?
If you filled your cylinders up with water it would go down into the sump...

it would take a while to feed through though. is it instant waterworks as soon as you put water in?

Thats what i thought so i had a good look but nothing obvious.
No it runs straight through pour it in the top of the rad and it flows straight through and out the sump hole even without engine running so can only be gravity.

If there was a large hole somewhere would the engine run so well?

Has your SJ got a brake servo? Are you sure you havent mistakenly put a water pipe onto the wrong point on the inlet manifold like twiss has mentioned. Can you take some pics and post them up of where all your pipework goes.

It would have to be a gaping crack somewhere for that to happen if it wasn't. The only thing that happens if you fit the headgasket on the wrong way around is an oilway gets blocked. Is the head all correctly torqued down? Was it checked that it wasn't warped before fitting it? (would have to be really warped for this to happen though.)

whoaaaah I'm sure you didn't need to go as far as taking the engine out even if you are taking the head off

You could always upload pics to photobucket etc. and link them across using the IMG code

The main thing I wanted to check was that all the coolant pipes were in the correct places on the inlet manifold.
