Help Bruce keeps cutting out

Post by tonsky » Mon Jul 02, 2012 2:40 pm

Ok under power i.e. foot on accelerator Bruce runs lovely

Go to change gear, stop at a junction anything that means foot is not on accelator, revs completely drop off and Bruce stalls.

Any ideas? maybe a sensor?

Thanks

Toni

is it carb or single point injection?

First port of call on a carb, check wiring to and from the fuel stop solenoid.

blocked fuel filter?

I place bets on the auto choke not working... pretty much happens on all Suzuki 413/Samurai carbs eventually!!!

Its really annoying trying to brake for a junction at the bottom of a hill while still feathering the accelerator pedal!!!
If scott's solutions and nothing else easy doesnt work, you can take the chamber off the top of the carb and unscrew the top butterfly (choke) inside the carb. if you remove it and it fixes it, it's probably the carb!!! :)

Ahhh so its an SPI one?

It wont be the choke plate then!!! I wonder if it could be a sensor that's reading the fuel air mix wrong...

Sensors that spring to mind are Lambda sensor, possibly temperature sensor or air flow meter.
There's three ways of doing things:

The right way,
The wrong way
And my way, which is like the wrong way but faster.

Thanks Twiss and Edweird

My Dad did have a guess that it might be a sensor any idea where these are located so we can check them out? and any good place to purchase new ones?

Ill own up its my vehicle but yes i am female so im trying to learn and i have to take the instructions to my Dad or boyfriend so they can show me where parts are and how to fix them. Bruce is a joint project.

Any help greatefully received? im thinking would a Haynes manual be a useful item?

To be honest you would be better off just looking at the service manual on the internet.

The haynes manual is extremely vague when it comes to SJs and Samurais, at points its pretty much useless

Here are the locations of the manual files. You will need Adobe PDF reader to view them.
Probably best if you right click them, then choose "Save Target As"/"Save Linked Content" or similar.
Then you can save them on your computer and not have to wait for them to download every time :)

Service Manual Part 1
Service Manual Part 2
Service Manual Part 3

You may also need the supplementary book for the Fuel Injected model like yours. It contains information on the >1994 models

Injection Manual Part 1
Injection Manual Part 2
Injection Manual Part 3
Injection Manual Part 4
Injection Manual Part 5

The first lambda sensor (measures exhaust gases to check your fuel air mix is correct) can be found on the exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the engine. It should be very visible sticking out of the exhaust with wires coming off it.

The second lambda sensor would be coming out of the catalytic converter part of the exhaust underneath the car. Just a word of advice regarding this. If the Suzuki is overfueling and spitting excess fuel into the catalytic converter, and this will eventually knacker it!
Try to drive it as little as possible until fixed! :)

I think they also have a Mass Air Flow sensor (measures the air going in) which could cause the problem. That will be somewhere between the air filter box and the throttle body.

Hope this helps
