New racer build thread

Post by Team Pink » Sun Apr 08, 2012 2:37 pm

I am restarting the build on the racer so thought I would start a build thread as from now.
The build more or less stopped Christmas 2010, I developed a problem with my inner ear and lost my sense of balance, I honestly thought I would not be able to race again.
After finally getting the right treatment I am well on the way to making a full recovery.
I have spent the winter clearing out my garage to give me a bit more space to work. Having to store all the parts from the racer I am going to reuse was the straw that broke the camels back I I could not work efficiently.
Yesterday I took the covers off the truck for the first time in about 5 months, there is a bit of surface rust on the unprotected steel but TBH it is not too bad.
I mocked up a couple of the panels so that you can get a picture of what it will look like
I took the tub off and it is now sitting in the garage. Finished the welding cage yesterday, few more tubes to go in but basics are now done.
Started doing the mounts for the transfer box as it will be mounted about 5" further back. I have added a pic of the old mount, not far off total failure. All mounts are now cut off, playing with my new plasma cutter this am.
As I was lining up the transfer box I am not happy with the gearbox mounts. This was one of the last things I did before I stopped working on the truck and I feel it puts the transfer box an inch too low. I will probably cut it all off tomorrow
Some basic specs of what it will end up as:
LWB 413 extended by 8" at the front making it a 101" wheel base
Redtop engine with skyline throttle bodies, canems ecu, freeflow 4:2:1 manifold and 2.5" stainless exhaust
Carlton gearbox with hydraulic paddle clutch
Rear mounted Evo 3 alloy rad
3 gal fuel tank with remote swirlpot
Landrover rear parabolics with Fox 12" shocks and FOA 2.5" air bumps
Full fiberglass body from Rickman Ranger
Discovery 24 spline axles
Kaiser locker in rear
205 16 Kumho KL71s

Hope the build goes well. Just a few pics of your old one for inspiration.

Tub sitting on the drive, roof is removable at the moment as it originally had a sun roof so I had to cut this out.
I can easily lift the tub on my own, there is nothing to it. I plan to tie the tub into the cage to increase the strength of both. I will probably remould the roof in a composite to increase impact resistance.

I have got a bit done this weekend.
welded a few more tubes into the cage, it may look like overkill but the body work is more to keep the mud off than to protect me if (when) I roll it. Only a couple of tubes left for the cage, I need to complete the gearbox tunnel first to give them something to tie into.
Floor is welded in on the drivers side, it acts as a stress plate to ensure that the sides will not collapse in the event of a side impact.

I have been working on the drivers seat mounting this weekend. As I am trying to lower everything to keep the CoG low it has been difficult to get the set where I want it and leave room for the silencer (this will be mointed across the car behind the seats) The seat is mounted on 25mm box, I have added some sheet metal to form part of the floor and to brace the mountings in all 3 planes. I have mocked up the passenger seat so will start getting this mounted through the week.
Transfer box is held in by rope to get an idea of how it will fit. Rockwatt is making a part for me so that I can mount the box in a cradle. If it works out as it should will be on general sale from him.

Looks Awesome Tim  That cage is really nice, did you bend it up yourself?

Cage was bent by Malcolm Whitbread to my design, it is 2" CDS so I could not bend it myself. I did the fitting and cut and notched all the tubes. Body was on and off a lot whilst I got the fit right, luckily it is very light!
ECU has arrived so I am now going through the manual and starting to draw up the wiring diagram.
