sammy diffs front and rear and vit diffs? the same??????

Post by timpaton » Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:43 pm

Hi all,

Think i have established that my rear diff is knackered.

Questions for you -
1. are they the same front and rear, the diffs?

2. are they the same on vitaras? are they interchangeable?

3. would a fit rear axle fit my sammy, if i can't find an sj one?

Cheers

Tim

will do my best to answer this one
1) front and rear diff casings and gears are physical identical although i believe the side gears which the driveshafts differ fron front to back something like front has 22 splines rears 24? So cannot directly swap a front diff for a rear.
2)Vitara front diffs are very similar but not a direct fit into the back of an Sj, although they will bolt in the spline count is different, they only have a single diff pin, and alloy housing, also the gearing in vitara diffs is much lower.
3) Vitara rear axle is totally different im afraid, diff is central on a vitara and chunkier than an sj's plus vitaras are coil sprung so no spring perches for your leaf springs to mount to. Can be done but certainly not an easy fit.
So all in all your best bet is a Sj rear diff as a replacement, worth pulling your diff out and checking whats nackered, could even be a shaft? whats the symptons?

I can probably get you a rear axle or maybe just a diff in sussex if you're interested
It's a spring over axle one though, and you wont be able to put the axle on in spring under axle...

Gents,

Thanks for your comments and answers, I have a development, bought a diff today, which i am assured is good and looks new.

It is complete with a pinion gear and crown wheel pre assembled. the only thing the seller could not advise me to was if it was geared for a 410 or a 413, mine is a 413 sammy.

I have counted 9 teeth on the pinion and 37 on the crown wheel, is this correct for a 413?

I will obviously count the teeth on the one i am taking off, but just wondered if anyone knew if this is correct?

I have had a look in the haynes manual and installation looks pretty simple, pop the rear brake drums off, disconnect the back plates, and pop the half shafts out a bit from the spines, etc

Cheers, Tim

Hi Tim

That works out at a 4.11:1 ratio so unfortunatly you have bought an sj410 diff, this won't even fit the samurai axle case.

You want a 3.727:1 ratio diff for a Samurai

let me have a look through my spare diffs and see what I can come up with, I might have a good spare front sammy diff that I can swap some rear sidegears into to make a rear diff, I'm not 100% sure i have but will look.

how much did you pay for the 410 diff if you don't mind me asking?

Oh the symptoms are it whines like a b.....

I have already replaced the gearbox, and the transfer box, and run all parts separately, and run the car with tbox in neutral through all the gears, and no noise whilst doing this, in 2 wd high.
The noise is speed rather than rev related, and goes away when you declutch whilst travelling, and gets louder under load and at speed.
No louder in 2 or 4wd, but much louder if you lean back while driving, as its a soft top, so i have deduced it is the back axle/diff
