Engine transplant, Backfire out of carb (not running)

Iv just put a 8v vit engine in and have had nothing but bad luck right the way through. Now iv finally got fuel to the car and was expecting it to start, but its not. No intention to start or nothing. But as soon as I pull the choke out I get a loud backfire and grey smoke out of the carb inlet. I have done a quick search and it sounds like the timing could be out. Any other ideas or links on how to check the timing. The engine was supposed to be out a of running sj. I did remove the distributor were it mounts to the block if that makes a diff

P.s. no cooling system is on the car or front end. I want to hear it start before i put it all back together.

p.s.s Its ona su carb that came of the 1.3 engine but i havent changed the spring or jet yet as thats coming next week but i expected it still to start

sounds like you have put the dizzy back on in the wrong position.

You need to time the engine up to TDC (no.4 cylinder, align the mark on the cam pulley to the mark at 12 O'clock) remove the dizzy and refit it so that it points to the number 4 lead on the dizzy cap.

Right, so line the top mark on the cam up so it vertical, whip the dizzy off, line up the rotor arm so it facing number 4 position on the cap, refit the dizzy, turn the key and she should puurrr lol

Basically yeah, just remember that as the gear on the dizzy meshes with the gear on the cam it will rotate about 1/8th of a turn as you push it in so it might take you a few goes to get it in the right position
