some recovery gear for my sj

Post by trotter » Fri May 02, 2008 4:39 pm

got delayed in some ruts last week when i ran out of trees to winch off, i resorted to high lift jack and some logs under wheels to get out.
then started looking at ground anchors... and ended up with this.

i haven't tried it yet but only downside i can see is its a bit heavy and as its welded up cant be dismantled like some i've seen.

also been thinkin off front recovery points other than winch. quite like the idea of the bar through front chassis tube with shackles on the end as sold in 'BITS FOR VITS' but as i work in engineering am loathe to pay out for summat i can make myself so...
got this so far.

just have to make some steel plates up to bolt shackles through an it should be fine.
if in doubt, FLAT OUT!

Looks nice and heavy duty. I can’t imagine that breaking before the ground does!

Very interested to see how them front winch points turn out. That anchor looks strong mate, it'd probably knock 5mph off mine. What diameter bar have you used for the front tow points.

i just wedged the anchor in but my luggage box in the back an tied it down with a couple of straps.

however... it didn't work!    had to use baron as a anchor instead.. cheers for that dude!
so back to the drawing board for me. i think the spade angle needs to be sharper to dig in the ground more we shall see...

as for the bar it 24mm dia and hopefully i'l have it finished this week and put up some more pics for you

No problem. I think we are on about four times you’ve towed me out.

I think I should point out that it wasn’t me personally that was the anchor but my Sammy. I’m a large chap, I work out  and eat plenty of sandwiches... but I’m not quite chunky enough to be used as a winch anchor.

I have one suggestion on the ground anchor mods. Perhaps when increasing the angle, you could extend the bar to the spadey bit (technical term) so that it can go in deeper before the main bar touches the ground... possibly.
