i still cant afford to replace the engine  but im thinking do i want to? its been good up to this point, certainly the most powerful of the 3 :brows:
Ive had the head done, skimmed, valves ground, stem sills replaced. the alternator has been sorted, bracket bolts all replaced after snapping off in the block
so why dont i just do the rings, i cant make it worse :hahaha:

What a bitch. I would'v'e thought rings wouldn't be too hard to find?

It's not that difficult. You could probably do it without taking the engine out of the car in an SJ. You need the head off so the pistons can go up, and the sump off so you can undo the bell ends. Sorry, big ends. Then you just ease the pistons out the top of the engine, not completely, just so the rings are exposed and take out the old rings. I think you get a special gadget to help you fit new rings in, but I just used a pair of big, flat ended screwdrivers to squeeze the ring whilst I dropped the piston back down, then you bolt everything back together, I was careful to put everything back where it came from, so the bolts all went in the same holes, though I'm not sure if it matters.

However, that was in a 1.4 litre Vauxhall Astra MK2 engine carb fed pig. Gutless but hard-wearing and reliable.

Shame my dad wrote the car off a few months later, the engine along with it. The block was split from the starter mount into the nearest cylinder. That was one hard tree.
